Thank you for this article. I was horrified when they announced the ban despite it being entirely unnecessary. I’m a trans adult so it doesn’t impact me, but my heart breaks for all the trans kids out there who will be forced to experience puberty and have their dysphoria worsen.

Sadly, cruelty appears to be the point of the ban and I’m more scared than I’ve ever been for the future of trans people in the UK.

I have friends with trans kids, and it’s horrifying. They’re too young to need blockers yet. I just hope we can fight this anti-trans nonsense and get thing back on the right track for our rights, for trans kids rights, before they get to the point where they do need them, if they want them.

So the Heritage foundation is holding a smoking gun. They can't possibly be the only motivation for what going on in the government. We need to find out who else had deep pockets and unfair influence on this issue. What was their agenda and where their money came from.

There are a lot of different groups to be honest, and their hints of links to Christian right and other dodgy conservative groups, some from the US. Genspect, CAN-SG, LGB Alliance, they’re all part of the same anti-trans, anti-feminist, anti-gender network that’s linked into the far/Christian right, as well as a small but vocal and influential group of anti-trans academics and clinicians. These people don’t hide who they are, but they do hide who’s funding them. Why the government listens I’m not sure, probably because that’s how moral panics work: once those groups and the media have whipped up a panic and spread lies about trans people and trans healthcare, it looks bad for the government if they don’t do something. And that something is attack us with policy and the law.

I don't know where you're from originally but on the United States side of the pond our supreme Court ruled in a famous decision referred to as citizens United, that corporations and essentially special interests and dark money could unfairly influence politics. It basically cleared the way for our politicians to be bought and sold through unregulated campaign donations.

Our worst politicians can usually be divided into two groups either those who will do anything for money And those who have some idealistic agenda based on either religion or chauvinism or maybe white supremacy and some politicians are members of both groups. The third most important motivation for our lawmakers is votes. Many of our politicians have red state constituencies composed of low information voters who are highly religious and hateful of trans people.

Trans issues are of very little importance to the average voter but they are a huge lightning rod and distraction for lawmakers trying to deal with the very difficult and controversial problems that are most important to us.
